Luke 6:42

42. Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye.

Cynicism and criticism are alive and well. Take a few moments of a reality television show and you will quickly discover that our culture thrives on judging others. The standard we use for others is usually different than the standard we use on ourselves.

We tend to use a microscope to view others, but use an out of focus pair of binoculars when we examine ourselves.

Jesus confronted this error of judging others without first examining our own lives. He says that once we address the plank in our own eyes, then we will be able to see others clearly.
